How Impactful Storytelling Secured a New Funder for Our Client
When one of our clients first came to us, they weren’t looking for help with fundraising.
Their request was focused on brand awareness: how to amplify their voice, how to showcase diverse stories across their community, and how to keep their storytelling consistent—especially on their blog and website. Straightforward, right?
But something unexpected happened.
The content we created didn’t just inform or engage. It opened doors—specifically, to a new funder for their grant-funded program.
Let me explain how we got there.

The Power of Going Beyond the Surface
We always begin our storytelling projects by asking the right questions:
- What are your goals?
- What are your challenges?
- What does success look like?
In this case, although the immediate request was for blog content, we uncovered a bigger need: the client was also actively looking for a new funder to sustain one of their key programs.
That insight shaped our approach. We didn’t just want to generate content for content’s sake. We wanted to build something that could serve multiple purposes—a story that could live on their site, resonate with their audience, and, potentially, speak to funders.

From Interview to Impact
We started by digging into the program itself. What was it designed to do? Who did it serve? What kinds of transformations were happening as a result?
Then, we got to work locating and interviewing the participants—those who had gone through the program and experienced meaningful growth.
As I shared in a recent conversation:
“We set up interviews with those who had demonstrated success in terms of their own experience—but also in what they were able to bring back to their own communities through the program.”
These stories weren’t just testimonials. They were vibrant, visual narratives of impact—capturing both personal transformation and broader community change. We paired participant quotes with powerful visuals that brought their journeys to life.
The finished piece was heartfelt, honest, and deeply human. And although it was originally created to live on the organization’s website, it quickly took on a new role.

A Strategic Story with Real Results
When the client began applying for new funding, they decided to use this story as part of their materials. Why? Because it showed the impact of their work—not in charts or reports, but through the lived experiences of the people they serve.
“This organization was able to use this story as supporting material to go after a new funder, who really appreciated having the insight into what it looked like in terms of results and impact through this program.”
And it worked.
The story helped them secure a new funder—ensuring the program could continue making a difference in the lives of others.

Why This Matters for Your Organization
If you’re a nonprofit, foundation, or social impact team, you already know how important your work is. The challenge? Making others see it—and feel it—especially funders and stakeholders.
Storytelling can be one of the most effective tools in your communications toolbox, but only when it’s used strategically. The key is aligning your content with your goals.
That means asking yourself:
- Are we telling the right stories to move people to action?
- Are we capturing voices that reflect the true impact of our work?
- Are we using our content to connect with funders, partners, and community stakeholders in meaningful ways?
Because here’s the truth: Funders aren’t just investing in numbers or outcomes. They’re investing in impact—in transformation, in hope, in possibility. And nothing communicates that better than a well-told story.

It’s More Than a Blog Post—It’s a Bridge
Yes, we help organizations with storytelling. Yes, we create content—videos, blogs, campaigns, and more.
But the real transformation happens when storytelling becomes a bridge between your mission and your audience. When it’s intentional. Strategic. Purpose-driven.
“If we know what your goals are from the beginning, we can build stories that help you achieve them.”
And that’s exactly what we did in this case—turning a simple blog assignment into a tool that helped secure new funding.
