The Signs & Symptoms of Trauma and How To Heal with Psychotherapist Jennifer Tomko
Trauma can impact anyone, and at some point in our lives, it likely affects all of us. The Surfside building collapse. A second large earthquake in Haiti. The 20th anniversary of 9/11. A global pandemic. These are just a few examples that have taken place in 2021 alone. Let’s face it, traumatic events are all around us.
Luckily professionals like Jennifer Tomko, a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in treating trauma, are here to help clients find growth through their trauma. In episode 64 of Lift U Up: Inspiring Health Stories, Jennifer shares her journey of how a mid-life crisis and cross-country move led her to finding her bigger purpose: helping trauma survivors find their own meaning.
Jennifer Tomko has always had a passion for helping people. She graduated with a degree in social work, and began her career counseling patients in hospital and school settings. While she loved her work, she found herself hitting a “mid-life crisis” and knew it was time to reinvent herself. She relocated to Florida, where she sought out a fresh start.
Upon her arrival in Florida, Jennifer started working in a private practice, but quickly found out that the team she was working for did not have a vision that aligned with her own. With a strong passion for helping trauma survivors, Jennifer left and began a private practice of her own, where her goal is to make therapy fun.
As Jennifer explains in the episode, trauma can happen to anyone. We are all humans with barriers, and sometimes therapy is necessary to help us overcome those barriers. From our collective COVID-19 experience to near death experiences like one of our previous podcast guests shared on Episode 16, trauma can happen to any of us at any time. Jennifer works daily to make therapy a “normal”, welcoming experience for anyone who needs it — or wants to grow. She implements techniques like ENDR, a practice well-known after Prince Harry discussed using it, to show her patients how they can use their trauma to grow as they pursue a more purposeful future.
